Designed especially for outdoor activities where heat and perspiration need to be dumped effectively and continuously --- the men's Smartwool PhD®Ultralight Sport Jacket is also a great choice when weight/packability is a consideration and wind, mist or drizzle may be in the forecast. The jacket --- in a black, men's large in new condition --- is very difficult to find and especially for well under the MSRP of $115.
The jacket is made primarily of tough, but extremely thin and lightweight nylon. It has strategically placed “body-mapped” Smartwool Sport 150 mesh panels where heat and moisture tend to accumulate: under the arms and below the neck on the upper back. The durable, stretchy panels --- in addition to providing superb breathability, temperature and odor control and moisture management --- allow the jacket to remain snug against a baselayer. They are a blend of of 54% merino wool and 46% polyester.
Heat and moisture transfer are further aided by covered vents sewn in along the top of the shoulders and a grommet just above each back mesh panel. The collar is lined with the same merino wool blend material as the panels. A smaller, but sturdy front zipper has a solid, grippy pull, a “garage” and a wind flap behind it.
The jacket's DWR coating provides water repellency (for light precipitation) and improves the nylon shell's inherent wind resistance. It rolls up quickly into a chest pocket which becomes a zippered 5” x 7”/13 x 18 cm pouch with a hanging loop and grommet for ventilation. Reflective elements add visibility in low light conditions and a drop tail hem provides increased protection.
CONDITION, FIT & SIZING: The jacket is brand new with tags. A men's large, it fits a stated chest size range of 42”- 44”/107-112 cm, a waist size of 35”-37”/89-94 cm, hip size of 42”-44”/107-112 cm and an arm length of 33”-34”/84-86cm. Cuffs are elasticized.
Measured flat, the actual measurements are: 22”/56cm pit-to-pit and 31”/79cm in length from the top of the collar in back to the bottom of the 2”/5cm drop tail hem. The body is straight (no shaping) and there are no hem side slits.
The fit is stated as “regular,” but I would describe it as somewhat trimmer than the usual Smartwool regular because there is not a lot of stretch. So --- if you happen to be carrying a bit of extra weight, especially in front, you might want to consider a different jacket. In any event, a couple of relatively thin layers will likely be all you will be able to comfortably wear underneath.
